“Everything South Florida has to offer from bargains to banquets”

South Miami restaurants we like

There are dozens of good restaurants within walking distance of our home in easy-living High Pines.  One of the things that makes life here so good.  Here are a few that we particularly enjoy:

La Crepe Bistro

As its name says, this charming little restaurant offers primarily crepes of all sorts, also sandwiches and salads.  Everything is fresh and tasty–and affordable.  Some nice wines and beers, too.  The decor is typical bistro style, nothing fancy.  There are sidewalk tables for when the weather is nice.  The proprietors are a married couple.  She’s French, he’s middle-eastern.

Cafe Pastis

Cafe Pastis offers a full menu of delectable fare Provence style.  Lamb, beef, duck, chicken, fresh fish, soups, salads all prepared daily.  And, ooh la la, unbelievably tasty deserts!  There’s a regular menu and chalkboard specials every day.  Cafe Pastis is open for lunch and dinner and has an extensive wine list.  Chef Philippe Jacquet and partner Miami native Scott Price put authentic country French food on your table right in South Miami.  Sidewalk tables, too.  Call for reservations.

Miyako
5844 SW 73rd Street
South Miami, FL 33143

For Japanese we like this family-style restaurant.  It has a sushi bar and sit down tables and even two sit-on-the floor banquets.  Fairly typical menu, but everything is always very well cooked and served fresh.  My current favorite is the grilled Hamachi collar, the part of the fish from around the gill area that is very bony but filled with succulent morsels of meaty flesh.  It’s an appetiser, but it’s plenty for me with a small bowl of brown rice on the side.  My wife likes the Miami Heat roll, with cream cheese, avocado, crab and a delicious sauce.  The staff is always friendly and welcoming.  They also have a restaurant up in Doral, near the airport.

New Chinatown
5958 S Dixie Hwy
South Miami, FL 33143

This restaurant is a South Miami institution.   Classic Chinese food, top-quality in a pleasant dining environment.  My favorite is the sauteed scallops with spinach. Full bar.  They also offer catering.  No home delivery, but the take-out is really fast.  I usually call and by the time I get there in six or seven minutes, the order is waiting.
